fsck and lost&found

What are the effects of running an fsck -y and losing data on a boot disk?
For example, I have an Sunblade 1000 that has crashed and will not boot.
What will be the effect if I boot cdrom -s, then mount c0t0d0s0, then fsck
-y that filesystem. Will I lose data and will it put the this data in the
lost&found?
